Ask and Show
Reading comprehension is an important early literacy skill, but oftentimes, children with speech challenges do not have an easy way to show what they know. This Ask and Show series of books offers a built-in solution for this. After each page of the story, a comprehension question is offered, along with illustrated answers. There is plenty of room on the page for the child to point to their answer, or even look intently at it to signal their understanding.
The books are intended to be read aloud to the child by an adult. When starting, it is a good idea for the adult to model pointing to the correct answer themselves as the child learns the back and forth of the question and answer format. As the child gains confidence, allow him or her to take over answering, with plenty of processing time and encouragement offered.
The different books offer a mixture of topics and complexity, but they are often the same ones that any early elementary student would encounter. I hope they help you and your wonderful young readers connect and feel supported!
